Make sure you have your car on jack stands while working underneath it

Sad story.

My step-sister had a friend who’s father died in a similar accident - working under the car with no jackstands and it fell off the jack .

And one time I was working on my ‘81 Accord, trying to loosen the hub nut while it was just on the scissor jack, and I managed to roll the car forward, and off the jack. Thankfully I wasn’t hurt, and only needed a change in underwear. .

We had this story yesterday as well (focusing more on the fact it seems like he was stealing the cat):

Didn’t get the detail that he lived long enough to call 911. Does not sound like a pleasant way to go.

I honestly can’t fathom getting under a car without jackstands and wheel chocks if any wheels are on the ground.

If I don't have access to jackstands for some reason, I will slide a wheel underneath for some added protection.

Honestly, even on stands with wheel chocks, it makes me nervous as hell.

Same, my Rover’s the only thing I wrench on these days and a lot of the time I just crawl under it without putting it on jack stands at all. I’ve got enough space and there isn’t that little voice in the back of my head worrying that a jackstand will spontaneously let go.

i have had more than a FEW of my trucks fall off of jacks while i was working AROUND them, and they are a PAIN to get back up off the ground....... sadly there was a kid where i work, one of those hack mechanics. the ones that will work on anyones junk that works at the place usually makes stuff worse. nice enough guy. one day he didnt show up to work, found out from his sister that a car he was working on fell off of its jack, and killed him. JUST A KID. man, life is short, and i know i have had plenty of near misses myself..........

I always worry about my shitty garage floor, or my crapass driveway, crumbling underneath, and causing the stands to topple over.

That’s.... actually a very valid concern and now that you mention it I have no idea about the quality of my townhouse’s garage floor. It’s been fine with 4500 pounds of Range Rover on jackstands so far so I guess it’s alright? Out of paranoia I keep the floor jack pumped up under one of the axles and if I take wheels off I try to put them someplace they’d catch the frame or axle and prevent it from crushing me if the worst happened.

On one hand I feel like I’m being overly paranoid, on the other hand I live alone and don’t usually keep my phone in a pocket while I’m wrenching so if something horrible happened while wrenching on a Saturday morning it’s totally possible no one notices something’s wrong till I don’t show up to work Monday and as I’m salary with flexible hours and the ability to work from home it could be till Tuesday before someone thinks something’s unusual enough to check up on things(it def wouldn’t be remotely okay if I just ghosted on work for a day without explanation that I’m working from home or W/E but I doubt people would be so worried to check up) , and that kinda scares me.

I’m sure your floor is fine, if it’s in good enough condition that you have never thought to be concerned about. My garage floor is in bad shape. It has several cracks, and in some spots it is slowly turning itself back into a pile of aggregate.

I also leave the jack pumped up next to the stand, and I've also taken to putting little squares of plywood under my jack stands.

Yeah, nothing like that. I don’t know much about concrete but do know that my townhouse definitely isn’t of top-notch construction, I was pretty much on a mission to find the cheapest possible rent with a garage haha.

I know how that goes!

When it was time to buy, I bought the one we could afford, that met our other requirements, that had the biggest garage. Unfortunately that garage wasn't built very well, but it existed and it keeps my stuff out of the rain.

I just had a hard time finding a place with any sort of garage that didn’t mean I ended up paying for a bunch of living space I don’t need, even if I could work it into the budget. Ended up finding what amounts to a one-bedroom apartment on top of a two car garage which is pretty much perfect for me.
